Southern Manners: Holding Doors

October 25, 2013

All those years ago when I moved South for college, I remember I wrote a paper in my freshmen English class about how different the South was from the North. You have to love intro courses when you can get away with that. This was also the professor that told me I was allowed to use the word “y’all” when writing a formal paper for him. I remember I wrote about trains, the word y’all and the holding of doors. I think I’ve talked about the first two, but not the door holding yet.

I will never forget walking into the student union and every guy who was walking near me holding the door open for me. It is just how people are down here, you hold doors open for people. I love the good manners in the South!
